What to expect

The 2026 FENS-Chen Institute Summer Program on AI-Accelerated Neuroscience Discovery and Translation brings together the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and neuroscience for an intensive six-day programme hosted by the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the BrainHealthX Hub, C2D3, and the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). Running from July 12–18, 2026, this summer programme offers a unique opportunity to explore how AI is transforming brain research and mental health care.

Programme Focus

The summer school will dive deep into the latest advances at the interface of AI and neuroscience, covering four key areas:

  • Cognitive Computational Neuroscience — understanding how computational models can explain brain function and cognition
  • AI in Neuroscience — applying machine learning and deep learning techniques to analyse neural data and uncover new insights
  • Neurotechnology — exploring cutting-edge tools for recording, stimulating, and interfacing with the nervous system
  • Translation of AI for Brain and Mental Health — bridging the gap between research and clinical applications to improve diagnosis and treatment

Through lectures, workshops, and hands-on sessions, participants will gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge from leading experts in both academia and industry.

Who Should Attend

This programme is designed for postdocs, PhD students, and MRes students with backgrounds in mathematics, engineering, computer science, or neuroscience. Programming experience (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB) is beneficial, while experience with AI and machine learning is desirable but not required. Whether you're a neuroscientist looking to incorporate AI methods into your research or a computer scientist interested in applying your skills to brain science, this summer school offers the perfect environment to develop your expertise.

Learning Environment

Beyond the classroom, participants will engage with local and international experts, as well as industry partners from across Cambridge's renowned innovation ecosystem. The programme provides ample networking opportunities and time to explore Cambridge's beautiful landscapes, historic architecture, and rich academic heritage. This combination of rigorous academic content and cultural immersion creates an ideal setting for interdisciplinary collaboration and learning.
