What to expect

Accelerate Science presents a lunchtime seminar exploring cutting-edge applications of AI in cultural heritage preservation and mental health therapy. Taking place at the University of Cambridge on 1 June 2026, this session offers researchers and academics the opportunity to engage with pioneering work that demonstrates AI's transformative potential across diverse scientific domains.

Featured Research Presentations

Anna Breger, Project Leader at Cambridge, will present "AI meets cultural heritage: Non-invasive imaging and machine learning techniques for the reconstruction of degraded historical sheet music." Her talk explores how multispectral imaging (MSI) combined with machine learning can recover illegible medieval music notation from damaged manuscripts. These degradations—caused by iron-gall acidity, physical damage, or deliberate erasure—have rendered portions of historical documents unreadable for centuries. Breger will demonstrate advanced post-processing techniques applied to medieval manuscripts and fragments with musical notation from Oxbridge libraries, and introduce a publicly-available MSI processing toolbox that promises to democratise access to these powerful restoration techniques.

Rishabh Balse from Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology will discuss "Fine-Tuning Large Language Models on Multi-Turn Conversations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy." His research investigates how large language models can be adapted for therapeutic applications, potentially expanding access to evidence-based mental health support.

Who Should Attend

This seminar series targets members of the University of Cambridge interested in AI for Science research. Whether you're working in digital humanities, computational imaging, natural language processing, or exploring cross-disciplinary applications of AI, these presentations showcase practical implementations that bridge theoretical advances with real-world scientific challenges.

Lunch will be provided for registered attendees. The event runs from 12:00 to 13:00, making it an ideal midday opportunity to discover how AI is accelerating scientific discovery across Cambridge research communities. Future talks in the series are listed on Talks@Cam.
