About this event

What to expect

Join a collaborative Python coding session where developers of all experience levels come together to practice, learn, and share knowledge through hands-on problem-solving. Hosted by Ray in partnership with CodeHub Bristol and the Women's Tech Hub, the Python Code Dojo runs every two weeks at DeskLodge House in Bristol's creative quarter.

What Makes This Different

Unlike competitive hackathons or rigid training courses, the Python Dojo follows the martial arts dojo philosophy — a space where both masters and students refine their craft through deliberate practice and peer learning. Whether you're taking your first steps in Python or you're a seasoned developer looking to explore new approaches, you'll find a supportive environment designed for genuine skill development.

The format removes common barriers to participation. You don't need Python installed locally — sessions use Replit, an online interpreter and IDE accessible through any browser. All you need is a laptop (recommended but not essential) and access to the Python Dojo Discord server, where the community discusses ideas, shares previous solutions, and supports each other between meetups.

How Sessions Work

Each 2.5-hour session follows a structured yet flexible format:

  • Arrival and introductions (first 20 minutes) — Meet fellow participants and settle in
  • Exercise selection — Attendees suggest coding challenges in the Discord ideas channel, then vote democratically on which problem to tackle
  • Team formation — Split into small groups of 2-4 people, with teams typically including at least one experienced Python developer
  • Collaborative coding — Work together to solve the chosen exercise, sharing approaches and learning from each other's problem-solving strategies
  • Solution presentations — Each team walks through their approach (complete or incomplete), explaining their creative process and how they overcame obstacles

This peer-learning approach means beginners benefit from direct mentorship while experienced developers gain fresh perspectives and practice explaining complex concepts — a valuable skill in any development role.

Who Should Attend

The dojo welcomes anyone interested in improving their Python skills, regardless of current ability. You might be:

  • A complete beginner curious about programming
  • A developer from another language exploring Python
  • An
