About this event

What to expect

Artificial intelligence is transforming how researchers create, share, and verify knowledge — but are we losing sight of the principles that make research trustworthy and accessible? This Bristol event brings together leading voices to explore the tension between AI's promise and open research fundamentals.

Open Research in the Age of AI is a half-day event that examines how AI systems are reshaping scholarly practice, research integrity, and the principles of openness that underpin credible science. Taking place at the Bill Brown Design Suite during Bristol Data Week 2026, this gathering addresses a critical question: as AI makes information feel more accessible than ever, are we actually making the underlying research less transparent?

The afternoon begins at 13:00 with an informal buffet lunch — an opportunity to connect with fellow researchers, librarians, publishers, and anyone concerned about the future of scholarly communication. The formal programme launches at 13:45 with a keynote from Dr Beth Montague-Hellen from the Francis Crick Institute. Her presentation, "At our Fingertips but out of reach: Does AI need Open Research?", tackles how AI can create an illusion of expanded knowledge while obscuring access to source literature and data. Dr Montague-Hellen brings unique perspective as both a former bioinformatician and current advocate for radically open data and software sharing.

Following the keynote and refreshment break, a panel discussion features diverse expertise from University of Bristol researchers and the publishing sector:

  • Matthew Brown — Professor in Latin American History and chair of the University Ethics of Research Committee
  • Pen-Yuan Hsing — Open source, open science and citizen science researcher & advocate
  • Miriam Maus — Publishing Director at IOP Publishing
  • Aisling O'Kane — Associate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction for Health

This session will explore critical questions around reproducibility, data sharing, methodological transparency, and research integrity in an AI-augmented research landscape. How do we maintain scholarly rigour when AI intermediates access to knowledge? What responsibilities do researchers have when using AI tools? How can openness serve as a counterbalance to AI's opacity?
