What to expect

Join a groundbreaking joint seminar from the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human and the ART-AI UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training as Dr. Jonathan R Wolpaw explores the future of neurological recovery through AI and adaptive neurotechnologies. This session offers a rare opportunity to hear from a leading neurologist at the forefront of brain-computer interface research and CNS plasticity studies.

What You'll Learn

Dr. Wolpaw will challenge conventional rehabilitation approaches by presenting new strategies that enhance recovery from CNS damage. Rather than relying solely on skill-specific practice—which often fails to produce adequate recovery—his research demonstrates how understanding the brain's "heksor" networks (neuron and synapse networks extending from cortex to spinal cord) can revolutionize treatment protocols.

Key topics include:

  • CNS Plasticity Mechanisms: How the central nervous system continuously adapts and maintains skills even as muscle activity and kinematics change
  • Novel Rehabilitation Strategies: Two groundbreaking approaches that increase plasticity and target beneficial changes to critical sites within damaged heksors
  • Clinical Applications: Evidence from animal and human studies showing how combined protocols enhance lasting recovery
  • Brain-Computer Interfaces: Insights from Dr. Wolpaw's pioneering work with EEG sensorimotor rhythms for BCI-based communication and control
  • Computational Modeling: How AI and modeling accelerate protocol development and optimization
  • Personalized Medicine: The role of biomarkers in predicting treatment efficacy and guiding patient-specific protocol design

About the Speaker

Dr. Jonathan R Wolpaw brings 50 years of groundbreaking research in spinal cord and brain plasticity. As Director of the NIBIB/NIH-funded National Center for Adaptive Neurotechnologies (NCAN) and Professor of Biomedical Sciences at SUNY, his work has fundamentally reshaped understanding of how skills are acquired and maintained in a plastic CNS.

His contributions include developing the general-purpose BCI2000 software platform (supporting nearly 3,000 peer-reviewed studies worldwide), leading the first multicenter trial of a brain-computer interface for independent home use, and demonstrating that reflex conditioning can imp
