About this event

What to expect

Join codebar Brighton for a free, inclusive programming workshop at MPB's Brighton offices on Ship Street. This welcoming community event focuses on making tech more diverse and accessible through peer learning and supportive 1-to-1 coaching.

What to Expect

Whether you're taking your first steps in programming or working on a personal project, you'll be paired with an experienced coach who can guide you at your own pace. The evening begins with pizza and networking at 18:30, followed by two hours of focused coding and learning from 19:00 to 21:00. An optional pub visit afterwards provides more opportunities to connect with the community.

How It Works

The workshop operates on a pairing-based model where students work 1-to-1 with coaches (subject to availability). This personalised approach allows you to focus on your chosen programming language, framework, or project without the pressure of keeping pace with a classroom. Coaches volunteer their time and expertise to help students overcome challenges and build confidence in coding.

Who Should Attend

Students: Anyone from underrepresented groups in tech who wants to learn programming in a safe, supportive environment. All skill levels welcome — bring your laptop and any projects or tutorials you're working on.

Coaches: Experienced developers who want to share their knowledge and help make tech more inclusive. Your mentorship makes a real difference in helping students progress.

Practical Details

All pizzas provided are vegetarian and vegan. Make sure to add any dietary requirements to your codebar profile so the organisers can ensure there's something for everyone. Note that the MPB venue has a step at the entrance/exit, so wheelchair access is restricted — contact the organisers in advance if you need to discuss accessibility requirements.

The event is organised by a dedicated team of volunteers including Scout Burghardt, Nigel Tart, Lachlan Hooker, Josh Hudson, Laurence Alldis, Julia Loucks, and Husniye Erparun, all committed to creating a welcoming space for learning.

Register for this workshop on the codebar website (RSVP opens closer to the date).
