About this event

What to expect

If you've ever wondered what's really happening when AI 'understands' your question or why it sometimes gets things spectacularly wrong, this beginner-friendly session will give you the clarity you need. Hosted by Sussex Innovation at the Brighton campus, this 2.5-hour workshop strips away the hype and jargon to explain how AI actually works, where you encounter it daily, and why responsible AI matters.

What You'll Learn

Led by Alex Leathard from Hecaton Consulting, this practical session covers the fundamentals that every AI beginner needs:

  • Core concepts demystified — understand what AI actually is, and how it differs from machine learning and deep learning
  • Model types and real-world applications — discover the different approaches AI takes to solve problems, from recommendation engines to image recognition
  • Why AI makes mistakes — learn about hallucinations, edge cases, and the limitations of current systems
  • Bias, ethics and responsibility — explore how bias creeps into AI systems and what ethical considerations matter
  • The critical role of data — understand why data quality and quantity shape everything AI can (and can't) do

Perfect For

This session is designed for anyone at beginner to intermediate level who wants to understand AI without the marketing spin. Whether you're exploring AI for your business, considering how to integrate AI tools into your workflow, or simply want to cut through the myths and understand the technology shaping our world, this workshop provides the foundation you need.

No technical background required — just curiosity and a willingness to ask questions.

Part of a Learning Journey

This is event one in a 3-part AI series from Sussex Innovation. Each session builds on the previous one, so starting here gives you the grounding to get maximum value from the subsequent workshops. You'll leave with a solid understanding of AI basics, more confidence discussing AI in professional contexts, and a strong foundation for deeper learning.

Event Details

The session runs from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Sussex Innovation Centre on the University of Sussex campus — an ideal setting that combines academic rigour with practical business focus. Coffee and networking opportunities included.
