What to expect

What's the real story behind MCP, CLI, and Agent Skills — and which approach should you actually be using? This Manchester session from Practically AI cuts through the noise around agent tooling with a grounded technical comparison of three fundamentally different approaches that are often treated as interchangeable.

In just a few months, the conversation around AI agent tooling has swung wildly — from "MCP is the standard" to a growing backlash favouring CLI-based approaches, to the introduction of Agent Skills as a higher-level abstraction. Each camp claims to have the right answer, but the reality is more nuanced. This talk breaks down what's actually happening beneath the hype and helps you understand when each approach makes sense for production systems.

What You'll Learn

Phil Whittaker will walk through the technical reality of how agents interact with tools across three distinct paradigms:

  • Protocol-driven systems (MCP) — structured interfaces and standardised communication patterns
  • Direct execution (CLI and APIs) — lower-level control with fewer abstractions
  • Higher-level abstractions (Agent Skills) — responsibility delegation and contextual capabilities

The session focuses on practical trade-offs around control, context, and responsibility in agent systems. You'll understand why this debate has become so polarised, what each approach actually is (and isn't), and where each one works best in real-world scenarios.

Who Should Attend

This event is designed for software engineers and technical leaders actively building AI agent systems or trying to make informed architectural decisions in this rapidly evolving space. If you're tired of strong opinions without substance, or conflicting advice that doesn't help you ship production code, this session provides the clarity you need.

Event Format

The evening starts at 18:30 with pizza and networking at Accenture's Manchester office in Circle Square. The main talk begins at 19:00, followed by Q&A and open discussion. This is a great opportunity to connect with other engineers working on AI projects in the Manchester tech community.

Please note: Attendees must show ID on entry at reception.

Hosted by Practically AI: Applied AI for Software Engineers Manchester — a meetup group focused on production-ready AI implementation rather than theoretical discussion.
