About this event

What to expect

Marzieh Fadaee, Head of Cohere Labs at cohere, will present "Scaling LLMs Across Languages" at this evening event hosted by BLISS e.V. at TU Berlin. The 45-minute talk addresses a critical challenge in AI research: while scaling has driven remarkable progress in language models, improvements in peak performance often fail to translate across languages, leaving many linguistic communities behind.

What You'll Learn

Fadaee will demonstrate how multilingual models expose the limitations of scale and highlight why balanced performance across languages matters. The presentation argues for a fundamental shift from optimizing peak performance to lifting the floor—ensuring robust capabilities across all languages through better data curation, model design, and evaluation methodologies. The talk will illustrate these principles through Tiny Aya, part of the ambitious Aya initiative.

About the Speaker

Marzieh Fadaee leads research on fundamental AI problems at Cohere Labs, with expertise spanning multilingual language models, data-efficient learning, model evaluation, and trustworthy AI. She co-leads the groundbreaking Aya initiative, which brought together over 3,000 collaborators worldwide to create the world's largest multilingual instruction dataset and develop state-of-the-art multilingual language and vision models. Before Cohere Labs, she was Research Lead at Zeta Alpha Vector and holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam focused on neural machine translation. Her research appears in top venues including NeurIPS, ACL, EMNLP, and ICLR.

Event Format & Audience

This event welcomes anyone interested in cutting-edge AI research, particularly students, PhD candidates, academic researchers, and industry professionals with machine learning research focus. The 45-minute presentation will be followed by networking with fellow AI enthusiasts over complimentary drinks and pizza—an excellent opportunity to discuss the implications of multilingual AI and connect with Berlin's vibrant AI community.
