What to expect

Can machine learning decode the ripples of spacetime? AI4Science – AI for Gravitational Waves explores how cutting-edge AI is transforming astrophysics, bringing together researchers, engineers, and scientists to discover how transformer architectures and simulation-based inference are revolutionizing gravitational-wave analysis.

Featured Research

Annalena Kofler, PhD candidate in Machine Learning at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen (supervised by Bernhard Schölkopf), will present groundbreaking research on gravitational-wave parameter estimation using transformer architectures. Her talk draws from the paper "Flexible Gravitational-Wave Parameter Estimation with Transformers" and showcases the DINGO package—a powerful tool demonstrating how modern ML techniques accelerate scientific discovery in astrophysics.

Gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein and first detected in 2015, carry information about cosmic events like black hole mergers. Extracting precise parameters from these signals is computationally intensive. Kofler's work shows how transformers—the architecture behind ChatGPT and other language models—can be adapted to estimate physical parameters from gravitational-wave data with unprecedented flexibility and speed.
