About this event

What to expect

Master the fundamentals of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and build secure, local AI systems that work with your own documents—without sending sensitive data to external providers. This hands-on workshop, delivered by the AI Service Center Berlin-Brandenburg at the prestigious Hasso-Plattner-Institut, is the first in a four-part series designed to give you practical skills in modern AI information retrieval.

What You'll Learn

This introductory session focuses on the core components that make RAG systems work: local large language models, embeddings, and vector databases. You'll gain a solid understanding of how these technologies combine to create intelligent systems that can retrieve relevant information from your documents and generate contextual, understandable answers.

The workshop is structured around practical, hands-on learning. You'll set up a complete minimal RAG system from scratch, exploring semantic search capabilities and answer generation using real documents. By the end of the session, you'll have the technical foundation needed to assess and adapt RAG technology for your specific data and use cases.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for participants with prior technical experience. You should be comfortable with Python, GitHub, and Docker, or have completed a basic AI workshop. The session provides the groundwork for the subsequent parts of the series, making it essential for anyone planning to attend the full program.

Format & Practical Details

The 3-hour in-person workshop takes place at the Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam, one of Germany's leading computer science institutes. The hands-on format ensures you'll leave with practical skills you can immediately apply to your own projects. Admission is free, though registration is required due to limited capacity.

This is Part I of a four-part workshop series on efficient information retrieval. Each session builds on the previous one, creating a comprehensive learning pathway from fundamental concepts to advanced RAG implementations. The focus throughout the series is on data security and local deployment—critical considerations for organisations handling sensitive information.

Please note that photo, audio, and video recordings will take place during the event for documentation purposes.
