About this event

What to expect

How do algorithmic systems perpetuate bias, and what does this mean for automated decisions affecting our lives? AI & Discrimination offers a hands-on exploration of how discrimination emerges in AI systems and why technology is never truly neutral. Hosted by Stadtbibliothek Pankow in partnership with iRights.Lab, this accessible workshop breaks down complex concepts into practical examples anyone can understand.

The session examines how bias creeps into data collection and model training, shaping the outcomes of AI-powered decision-making systems. You'll explore real-world cases where algorithmic discrimination has impacted hiring, lending, law enforcement, and other critical domains. Through interactive discussion, you'll discover why seemingly objective systems can encode and amplify existing societal prejudices, and what safeguards are needed to build fairer AI.

What You'll Learn

  • How bias originates in training data and AI models
  • The mechanics of automated decision-making and where discrimination occurs
  • Real-world examples of algorithmic bias in action
  • Why AI systems require careful oversight and ethical frameworks
  • Approaches to identifying and mitigating discrimination risks

This workshop is designed for all experience levels — no technical background required. Whether you're concerned about AI ethics, curious about how algorithms shape society, or looking to understand these systems better, you'll gain practical insights into one of the most pressing challenges in modern technology.

The event takes place at Bibliothek am Wasserturm, a community library committed to digital literacy and public education. Doors open at 5:50 PM, with the session running from 6:00–7:30 PM. Admission is free, but registration is required due to limited capacity.

As AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini become embedded in everyday applications, understanding their limitations and biases becomes essential. This workshop equips you to think critically about the technology shaping our world.
