What to expect

Explore the risks, control problems and possible futures of AI superintelligence at this focused book-club discussion in Bangkok.

On Monday 21 September 2026, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm ICT, the Technology and Society Reading/Discussion – Bangkok group will examine Nick Bostrom’s influential book, Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies. Hosted by John S., the meeting takes place at the Starbucks near Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, 60 Ratchadaphisek Road, Khlong Toei.

What the discussion will explore

Bostrom’s Superintelligence asks what could happen if machines surpass humans in general intelligence, and whether artificial agents might ultimately protect humanity or place it at existential risk. The group will discuss the book’s philosophical framework for understanding how superintelligence could emerge, how it might reshape the world and whether people could retain meaningful control over systems far more capable than themselves.

Likely areas for conversation arising directly from the book include:

  • Possible paths towards machine superintelligence
  • The consequences of an intelligence explosion
  • Whether a powerful artificial intelligence could move beyond human control
  • How initial conditions might be designed to make advanced AI safer
  • The future of humanity and intelligent life if machine intelligence exceeds our own
  • Strategies for making the development of superintelligence survivable

Published more than a decade ago and written before modern large language models became prominent, the book remains regularly cited in popular and academic writing about AI. Rather than concentrating on practical AI development, it tackles the deeper philosophy of superintelligence, existential risk and humanity’s responsibility to make the “first move” wisely.
