About this event

What to expect

Join MoCo Makers for an intensive lab session focused on scanning samples and post-processing images with their custom-built Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) — an ambitious project that aims to visualize individual atoms using a combination of common and 3D-printed parts.

What to Expect

This hands-on lab day takes place at Steve's private electronics lab in Silver Spring, where participants will work directly with the STM hardware to run clean scans of gold samples and process the resulting data. This is a high-sensitivity experiment where success isn't guaranteed, but recent promising results have motivated the team to dedicate focused time to iterative testing and improvement. You'll be part of a real scientific process — experimenting, troubleshooting, and documenting findings that will help other maker communities replicate this ambitious build.

The Project

MoCo Makers is documenting their entire STM build process for learners worldwide, making this one of the first maker communities to share a comprehensive guide for constructing this advanced scientific instrument. All CAD files, code, and reference materials are available through their Hackaday project page. The team draws inspiration from successful DIY STM projects and is committed to creating detailed documentation that empowers other communities to attempt similar builds.

Who Should Attend

This event is ideal for makers, electronics enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by precision instrumentation and materials science. While in-person attendance is strongly encouraged for hands-on participation, online attendees can join via the provided meeting link to observe and contribute remotely. Whether you're experienced with microcontrollers and robotics or simply curious about cutting-edge maker projects, you'll find a welcoming community of skilled innovators.
