About this event

What to expect

Ready to transform how you build software? This hands-on workshop explores Spec-Driven Development using GitHub Copilot's SpecKit — a revolutionary approach that turns executable specifications into working implementations. Unlike traditional development where code is king and specs are disposable scaffolding, Spec-Driven Development makes your specifications the foundation that directly generates functional code.

Hosted by the DC-area Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Meetup Group, this practical session in Washington will guide you through building applications using SpecKit. You'll learn firsthand how this methodology flips the traditional development process, enabling you to move from requirements to working software faster and more reliably.

What You'll Learn

  • Core concepts of Spec-Driven Development and why it matters
  • Hands-on experience building applications with GitHub Copilot SpecKit
  • How executable specifications generate working implementations
  • Practical techniques for applying this approach to your projects

Prerequisites

To participate fully in this workshop, bring your laptop with:

  • VSCode v1.107 installed
  • GitHub Copilot extension enabled
  • Python 3.13 + uv
  • Git installed

Event Format

This in-person meetup kicks off at 4:45 PM ET with food and networking, giving you time to connect with fellow AI and machine learning enthusiasts in the Washington DC area. The hands-on workshop runs from 5:00 to 5:50 PM ET, providing dedicated time to explore SpecKit through practical exercises.

Light refreshments and food will be provided. Please note that a government-issued ID is required to enter the facility, and parking is paid but can be validated at the AIS office reception.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal for developers, software engineers, and AI practitioners interested in modernizing their development workflow with AI-powered tools. Whether you're experienced with GitHub Copilot or new to AI-assisted development, you'll gain valuable insights into how specification-driven approaches can accelerate your work.

Sponsored by Microsoft, this event is part of the ongoing AI-ML Meetup series connecting the Washington DC technical community. The venue is conveniently located right off the Silver Line metro's Wiehle-Reston Metro Station, making it accessible for attendees throughout the region.
