What to expect

Want to give kids a head start in coding while keeping them engaged and having fun? Coding Buddies is a hands-on Scratch programming workshop designed for elementary school students in grades 2–5, running every Wednesday evening in May 2026 at Ansley Grove Library in Vaughan, Ontario.

This four-week series pairs young learners with experienced volunteer programmers who guide them through weekly coding challenges using Scratch, a visual programming platform perfect for beginners. Whether your child has never written a line of code before or already has some experience, they'll find challenges suited to their skill level and opportunities to stretch their problem-solving abilities.

What to Expect

Each 60-minute session runs from 6:30–7:30 PM and focuses on tackling coding puzzles in a supportive, collaborative environment. Kids work alongside volunteer coding mentors who help them think through problems, debug their code, and develop computational thinking skills. The workshop format encourages experimentation, creativity, and learning from mistakes — all essential skills for young coders.

Who Should Attend

This program welcomes both coding newcomers and kids who've already explored programming. The challenge-based format means students can work at their own pace while pushing their skills to the next level. If your child is curious about how games and apps are made, enjoys puzzles and logic challenges, or has shown interest in technology, this workshop offers an ideal introduction to computational thinking.

Presented by Vaughan Public Libraries, this program is part of their STEAM for Kids collection, bringing science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics learning to young people across the community. The library is committed to accessibility — contact them directly if you need accommodations for your child to participate.

Registration covers all four sessions, so participants can build on their skills week after week and complete progressively challenging coding projects. [Register for Coding Buddies on Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/coding-buddies-registration-198
