About this event

What to expect

codebar Norwich runs free monthly coding workshops designed to make tech more diverse and welcoming. This April session at Artlist offers a supportive environment where women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people from underrepresented ethnic groups can learn programming at their own pace, paired one-on-one with experienced volunteer coaches from the local developer community.

What to Expect

The evening begins at 6:00pm with pizza, drinks, and networking — a chance to settle in, meet fellow learners and coaches, and discuss your coding goals. Around 6:25pm, students are paired with volunteer coaches for personalized coding instruction. You'll work together until 8:00pm, tackling whatever you're most curious about.

Common topics include:

  • JavaScript, HTML, and CSS fundamentals
  • Python programming
  • WordPress development
  • GitHub version control
  • Personal projects where you're stuck

No prior experience is necessary. Whether you're taking your first steps into coding, feeling stuck in your self-study, or simply learn better with supported coaching rather than solo tutorials, this workshop provides the structure and encouragement you need.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is specifically for women, LGBTQ+ people, and individuals from underrepresented ethnic groups who want to learn programming. If you're uncertain where to begin or what to learn, the organizers will help you find the right starting point during the networking session.

Experienced developers are also welcome to join as volunteer coaches — a meaningful way to give back to the community and support others on their coding journey in a low-pressure environment.

Practical Details

The venue, Artlist on St Giles Street in Norwich, is located on the second floor with lift access. Just bring yourself and a laptop — everything else you need will be provided, including great local pizza and refreshments.

codebar Norwich creates a space where you can learn in a conducive environment, meet others on similar journeys, and build both technical skills and confidence. The workshop format emphasizes personalized attention, community connection, and learning at your own pace without the pressure of keeping up with a predetermined curriculum.
