About this event

What to expect

CoderDojo is a global volunteer-led movement teaching young people to code in a fun, social environment. This hands-on workshop at Bibliotheek Hoorn gives children aged 7-17 the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of programming through practical projects they're passionate about — whether that's building websites, designing games, creating apps, or programming robots.

What to Expect

This 2-hour session provides a supportive, collaborative space where young coders can learn at their own pace. Whether your child is a complete beginner taking their first steps in programming or already has some experience and wants to develop their skills further, CoderDojo welcomes all levels. Mentors guide participants through projects based on their interests and skill level, encouraging creativity and problem-solving.

Participants might work with visual programming languages like Scratch, dive into web development with HTML and CSS, explore Python for game creation, or experiment with physical computing using robots and microcontrollers. The focus is on learning by doing — young coders choose what they want to create and mentors help them bring their ideas to life.

The CoderDojo Philosophy

CoderDojo operates on a simple but powerful principle: give young people the tools, guidance and space to explore technology creatively. There's no curriculum or fixed lesson plan — instead, children are encouraged to pursue projects they're genuinely interested in. This approach builds not just technical skills, but also confidence, persistence and computational thinking that applies far beyond coding.

The movement is entirely volunteer-led and free to attend, making coding education accessible to all young people regardless of background. CoderDojo sessions create a community where kids can share ideas, help each other solve problems, and celebrate their creations together.
