About this event

What to expect

A practical two-hour workshop in Leeds on 21 September 2026, exploring why accessibility compliance alone does not create genuinely inclusive services.

Moving beyond tick-box accessibility

A service can satisfy accessibility standards and still leave people feeling excluded or unsafe. What Compliance Misses examines the important distinction between making a service technically accessible and designing an experience that genuinely welcomes users, recognises individual needs and supports psychological safety.

Content Designers Naomi Busuttil and Hannah Atkinson from Hippo will unpack the gaps that conventional compliance exercises can overlook. They will also explore where trauma-informed practice fits into service and content design, showing how teams can better account for the complexity and uniqueness of being human.

Rather than treating inclusion as a final checklist, the session considers every stage of the user-centred design (UCD) process as an opportunity to create more thoughtful and inclusive services. Attendees can expect practical, actionable guidance covering:

  • The critical differences between accessibility and inclusion
  • Why technically accessible services are not automatically inclusive or safe
  • How to identify gaps that teams may be leaving behind unintentionally
  • The role of trauma-informed practice and psychological safety
  • Ways to embed inclusive thinking throughout the UCD process
  • How to move beyond standard compliance and guideline-led exercises

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for researchers, designers and product owners, as well as anyone interested in content design, inclusive design, accessibility compliance or accessibility guidelines. It will be particularly relevant to people involved in shaping digital services who want to examine not only whether users can access an experience, but whether that experience truly invites them in.

The in-person format offers two focused hours for exploring these ideas with practitioners working directly in content design. Its emphasis on the relationship between inclusion, trauma and service design makes it especially valuable for teams seeking a more human-centred approach than compliance alone can provide.…
