About this event

What to expect

Mastek4Good is a monthly in-person software engineering meetup in Leeds where volunteers use their technical skills to support local charities through practical, MVP-focused projects. Currently partnering with Simon on the Streets — a Leeds-based charity supporting people experiencing homelessness — this community brings together developers, designers, and tech professionals to deliver meaningful impact.

What This Session Covers

This meetup marks a critical transition from discovery to delivery. Following the previous session where the group explored the challenges Simon on the Streets faces and mapped current journeys, the focus now shifts to preparing for the build phase. Ahead of the event, work will be underway on the Business Requirements Document, providing a clearer view of what's needed.

The workshop-led session will address:

  • Build vs. Extend Decision: A focused discussion on whether to extend existing case management software or build something from scratch
  • MVP Scope Definition: Confirming what should be included in the minimum viable product
  • Delivery Approach: Aligning on how the build will be structured and coordinated
  • Data & Integration: Working through technical questions around data handling and system integration
  • Risk & Safeguarding: Considering the critical safeguarding requirements when working with vulnerable populations
  • Volunteer Coordination: Establishing how volunteers can contribute in a coordinated and responsible way
  • First Actions: Defining immediate next steps after the session

Event Format

Based on feedback from previous meetups, the format has been refined for efficiency. The evening begins at 5:30 PM with a shortened networking and food session, with the working session starting promptly at 6:00 PM. This structure ensures more hands-on time and less waiting around, addressing concerns from the last gathering.

Participants will split into focused working groups to tackle different aspects of the delivery preparation, using the discovery work already completed alongside the emerging Business Requirements Document. The aim is not to revisit discovery from scratch, but to use existing insights to establish solid foundations for building something genuinely useful, safe, and sustainable.
