What to expect

A free AI and digital adoption masterclass for SMEs, taking place at The Knowledge Exchange in Leeds on 23 September 2026, 8:30–11:00am.

Part of Leeds Digital Festival 2026, Living Lab: Digital Adoption for Business Growth focuses on how businesses can use automation, data analytics and AI to improve productivity and unlock growth. Rather than staying at the level of theory, the morning centres on three SME case studies: what each business implemented, what it cost and what its leaders would do differently.

Real lessons from digital transformation

One of the featured case studies comes from Jonny Ross and Fleek Marketing. Before launching the agency and working as a fractional CMO, Jonny helped run what became the UK’s largest designer sunglasses e-commerce retailer. The business ranked prominently on Google until a manual penalty in 2004 pushed the website down to page seven, even for its own brand name.

After two SEO agencies, tens of thousands of pounds in costs and an 18-month wait, turnover had fallen by 40%. A New York consultant subsequently restored the site to page one within a fortnight. Jonny will use that experience to explore the risks of depending on one acquisition channel, buying digital services without understanding them, and seeing similar patterns emerge around AI-driven search.

What the morning covers

Attendees can expect a practical mixture of case studies, live examples, discussion and networking, including:

  • SME applications of automation, data analytics and AI
  • Three real-world business implementation stories
  • Live examples presented by Leeds Beckett University
  • A roundtable and audience questions
  • Business support available through Leeds City Council
  • Ways SMEs can collaborate with universities to accelerate change

Business case studies start at 9:05am, with questions and observations at 9:50am. University examples and the roundtable follow at 10:00am, before a Leeds City Council business-support segment and networking from 10:30am.
