About this event

What to expect

Join the Leeds data science community for an evening of practical insights into building AI systems that deliver real-world value. This May meetup brings together two experienced practitioners who will share hard-won lessons from shipping AI products in production environments, from cost optimization strategies to architectural decisions that matter when probabilistic systems meet business requirements.

What You'll Learn

The evening features two talks that tackle different aspects of modern AI engineering. John Carney from PDFTA will explore Building Valuable Deterministic Products in a Probabilistic World, examining how the rise of LLMs has fundamentally changed how we approach software development. When almost everything we've built historically has been deterministic, how do we adapt our thinking and techniques to successfully build with probabilistic systems? John will share practical principles for navigating this shift.

Obinna Iheanachor from Rotork presents a compelling case study: From £8,000 to £40: What I Learned Shipping AI in a UK Engineering Company. This isn't theoretical—it's a real production system that processes 4,700+ engineering drawings, achieving a 99.5% cost reduction. You'll discover how combining deterministic methods with LLMs created a solution that outperformed cloud-only approaches on speed, cost, and reliability. Expect practical insights on when to call a model, managing cost vs accuracy trade-offs, and what breaks at scale.

Who Should Attend

This meetup is designed for AI engineers, machine learning engineers, data scientists, data engineers, software developers, and software engineers working with or interested in production AI systems. Whether you're shipping your first AI feature or scaling existing systems, you'll find actionable insights from practitioners who've solved these problems in real business contexts.

Event Format

The evening begins at 6:00pm with refreshments and networking (food available on a first-come, first-served basis), giving you time to connect with the Leeds data science community. Talks run from 6:50pm to 8:00pm, with each speaker presenting for 30-35 minutes. The session concludes with news and announcements about upcoming data events and opportunities in Leeds.
