About this event

What to expect

This hands-on workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and CNC machining — essential skills for makers, hobbyists, and professionals looking to create precision parts using computerized tools. Hosted by Freeside Atlanta, this 4-hour intensive session takes you from CAM fundamentals through to generating your first CNC program and taking home a finished part.

What You'll Learn

The class covers the complete CAM workflow using Fusion 360, one of the most popular CAD/CAM platforms for both hobbyists and professionals. You'll explore different types of CNC machines and processes, understanding why CAM software is critical for controlling these computerized tools. The hands-on curriculum includes:

  • Understanding CNC machine types and their capabilities
  • Importing and preparing parts in Fusion 360
  • Creating proper machine setups and work coordinates
  • Generating toolpaths for routing operations
  • Post-processing and generating G-code programs
  • Running your program on a CNC router to create a wooden part

Practical, Hands-On Experience

This isn't just theory — every participant will program an actual part to be manufactured on Freeside's CNC router. You'll machine a component out of wood and take it home as proof of your new skills. The workshop uses Fusion 360 throughout, giving you practical experience with software you can continue using after the class.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for makers, DIY enthusiasts, and professionals who want to add CNC capabilities to their skillset. No prior CAM experience required — instructor Griffin Brown will guide you through everything you need to know. While CAD knowledge can be helpful, it's not necessary for this class. If you're interested in learning CAD fundamentals, Freeside offers separate courses. Similarly, milling experience is beneficial but not required.

Participants don't need their own Fusion 360 licenses for this class — everything you need is provided. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to learn.

Workshop Details

The class runs monthly on the third Sunday and is limited in size to ensure personalized instruction. At $125, you get 4 hours of expert instruction, materials for your project, and the finished part you create. There are no special clothing requirements or health restrictions.
