What to expect

An online conference on 16 September 2026 for UK public-sector teams turning AI policy into resilient infrastructure, smarter procurement and better services.

The Government Technology and AI Conference 2026 examines how the UK public sector can translate fast-moving national policy into practical, responsible delivery. Against the backdrop of the Government’s 2025 AI Opportunities Action Plan, AI Playbook and State of Digital Government Review, the programme addresses the systems, skills, procurement processes and data foundations needed to improve public-facing digital services.

The stakes are significant: government departments have spent more than £3.35 billion on AI contracts, infrastructure and services, according to Tussell’s AI Procurement Tracker, while around half of the roles advertised through Civil Service digital and data campaigns in 2024 went unfilled, as reported by Parliament.

What the programme covers

Following online registration at 9.30am, Dr Matthew Forshaw, Senior Advisor for Skills at the Alan Turing Institute, will chair the conference. Confirmed sessions include:

  • Building resilience in government technology and supply chains , David Lovell, Head of Government Cyber Policy and Supply Chain at the Cabinet Office, will explore service continuity, adaptable critical systems, the Government Cyber Action Plan and ways to embed resilience into procurement and delivery.
  • Transforming government digital and AI procurement , Philip Belzar, AI & Automation Commercial Lead at the Government Commercial Agency, will examine complex contracts, supplier management, centralised frameworks, SME engagement, faster decisions and data-led oversight of technology spending.
  • Building digital literacy and skills across government , Professor Nisreen Ameen, AI Policy Advisor and Director of the Digital Organisation and Society Research Centre at Royal Holloway, University of London, will discuss workforce readiness, structural barriers to upskilling, inclusive access to learning, the AI Skills Framework and Adoption Pathway Model.
