Explore whether autonomous AI should have legal personhood, and how it could be held liable, at this free Glasgow Skeptics talk in Glasgow. On Tuesday 17 November 2026, Dr Andrew Rayner will examine a question increasingly important to AI regulation: can existing legal frameworks recognise the actions and liabilities of non-human autonomous agents? Rayner will make the case for legal personhood as a possible way forward while addressing the risk that this status could shift legal attention away from the humans behind AI systems. The presentation will cover: - How personhood has been applied beyond humans, including to animals, rivers, rainforests and other entities - Why granting AI personhood remains legally and academically contentious - A proposed theoretical model designed to limit the legal effects of “person” status - How AI personhood could operate within the law of negligence, providing a model for other legal fields Rayner is an academic at the University of Glasgow Law School specialising in private law, European human rights and legal theory. Their recent research examines how the law recognises the actions and potential liabilities of autonomous AI agents. The talk is suited to anyone interested in AI, law, regulation, critical thinking or technology policy; no required experience level is stated. Explore how AI is reshaping legal reasoning with Sir Colin Birss at the University of Glasgow on 20 November 2026, from 5pm to 7:30pm. The 39th Annual James Wood Public Lecture examines the rapidly changing relationship between artificial intelligence, courts and legal practice. Sir Colin Birss, Master of the Rolls and Lead Judge for Artificial Intelligence in England and Wales, will deliver an in-person lecture titled “AI and Legal Reasoning.” Topics will include: - How litigants, law firms and courts are already using AI - Potential judicial applications such as summarisation, inconsistency detection and anonymisation - Hallucinated case references, bias and personal responsibility for AI-assisted work - Privacy risks when legal information is entered into public AI systems - Whether legal privilege should extend to exchanges between litigants and AI bots - Whether public AI chatbots could eventually produce convincing legal analysis and reasoning Sir Colin became the first UK judge to acknowledge using AI while preparing a judgment in 2023. His career spans the Court of Appeal, civil justice and intellectual property law, alongside an early professional background in computer programming. This public lecture will be particularly relevant to legal professionals, judges, academics, law students and anyone interested in AI governance or the future of professional reasoning. It is organised by the University of Glasgow School of Law in collaboration with CREATe, the AHRC-funded Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy. A two-day open RSE hackathon at the University of Glasgow on 26–27 November 2026, focused on building reusable research software frameworks. Research Software Engineering practice and training often remain divided by discipline. This hands-on event brings contributors together to prototype shared building blocks that can work across the social sciences, life sciences and humanities. Over two days, teams will use a “thin-slice” approach: connecting only enough of each technical layer to demonstrate a genuine end-to-end feature, rather than attempting to complete an entire database or user interface. The goal is to produce both an overall system design, such as a UML diagram, and a working prototype. Programme - Thursday 26 November, 09:00–17:00: lightning talks framing the challenges, team formation and prototyping - Friday 27 November, 09:00–17:00: creation of a short showcase and community roadmap to carry promising prototypes forward The hackathon takes place at the Advanced Research Centre (ARC), University of Glasgow, 11 Chapel Lane, Glasgow, G11 6EW.
