About this event

What to expect

Learn to build and fine-tune a Named Entity Recognition (NER) model using Hugging Face and PyTorch in this hands-on machine learning tutorial. Hosted by Aurelie, an MSc Artificial Intelligence graduate from the University of Limerick, this session is part of a monthly series of practical AI tutorials for small groups in Dublin.

Named Entity Recognition is a fundamental NLP task that identifies and classifies named entities (people, organizations, locations, dates) in text. In this tutorial, you'll work through the complete pipeline: starting with a Hugging Face NER dataset, preprocessing and tokenizing the data, fine-tuning a pretrained transformer model, evaluating performance metrics, and running inference on completely new text samples. The entire workflow mirrors industry-standard practices used in production NLP systems.

What You'll Build

You'll receive a complete Jupyter notebook with clean, reusable code covering every stage of the NER pipeline. The tutorial emphasizes practical implementation over mathematical theory, making it accessible to those with basic Python knowledge. All code runs in Google Colab, so you only need a laptop and Google account — no local environment setup required.

Format and Structure

This is an intimate, hands-on learning experience limited to just 15 participants. The small group size ensures personalized attention and the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session. The tutorial runs for one hour at the Grafton Hotel lobby, where participants work through the material together with guidance from Aurelie.

Prerequisites and Target Audience

The tutorials provide a high-level practical introduction to machine learning and deep learning, focusing on data processing, model training, and evaluation with Python. While some tutorials may include mathematical formulas as part of algorithm explanations or complex data preprocessing depending on the specific task, the emphasis remains firmly on practical application rather than theoretical mathematics.

Booking Information

Places must be reserved in advance and are limited to 15 participants. You can book either through this Meetup page or by emailing aureliem219@gmail.com. Important: The Meetup registration count does not guarantee availability, so early booking is essential. Payment is required upfront to secure your spot, and fees are non-refundable unless
