What to expect

Introduce young coders to the fundamentals of programming at this weekly Code Club session in Cardiff. Held at Rhiwbina Library in the heart of Cardiff's northern suburbs, this hands-on coding club welcomes beginners and intermediate learners who want to develop practical programming skills in a supportive, community-focused environment.

What You'll Learn

Participants work with three core technologies that form the foundation of modern computing:

  • Scratch: Build games, animations, and interactive stories using visual programming blocks — perfect for beginners to grasp fundamental coding concepts without syntax barriers
  • Python: Progress to text-based programming with one of the world's most popular and versatile languages
  • HTML: Create and structure web pages while learning the building blocks of the internet
  • Physical Computing with Microbits: Bridge the digital and physical worlds by programming pocket-sized computers that respond to sensors and control outputs

The club's curriculum balances screen-based coding with tangible computing projects, helping young people understand how software controls hardware in everyday devices.

Session Details

This in-person Code Club meets weekly on Saturdays from 15:15 to 16:45 at Rhiwbina Library (Pen-Y-Dre, Rhiwbina, Cardiff CF14 6EH). The 90-minute format provides enough time for focused learning while maintaining engagement. With 27 tickets remaining for the 23rd May session, spaces are available but limited.

Participants should bring a laptop if possible, though the club works to accommodate those without their own devices. For attendees under 13, a parent or guardian may need to remain present throughout the session.

About Code Club

Code Club is a global network of free coding clubs for young people aged 9-13, part of the Raspberry Pi Foundation's mission to put the power of computing into the hands of young learners worldwide. This Cardiff location has achieved Star Club status, recognising excellence in delivery and community impact.

Experienced volunteers guide each session, supporting learners as they progress through projects at their own pace. The supportive environment encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and collaboration — essential skills for the digital age whether participants pursue technology careers or not.
