What to expect

Explore cutting-edge AI research transforming sleep therapy and pure mathematics at this Cambridge lunchtime seminar series hosted by the Accelerate Programme. This in-person session brings together the University of Cambridge AI for Science community for an hour of compelling talks and networking over lunch.

The April 2026 session features two diverse research presentations that showcase AI's expanding role across scientific disciplines:

Featured Talks

A Novel Diffusion Model based Approach for Sleep Music Generation
Kevin Monteiro from the Department of Computer Science and Technology presents groundbreaking research addressing insomnia and mental health through AI-generated music therapy. This work tackles a significant global health challenge — sleep disorders and mental health conditions affect millions worldwide — with an innovative, scalable solution.

The research leverages recent advances in diffusion models to synthesize personalized therapeutic music, moving beyond the limitations of expert-curated playlists. What makes this particularly impressive is the system's efficiency: optimized to train and run on a single GPU, making it accessible and cost-effective for real-world deployment. Through rigorous ablation studies and subjective human evaluations, the generated music has been shown to match or outperform existing baselines in both perceived quality and therapeutic relevance for sleep, while using only a fraction of the computational resources typically required.

Numerically Verified Proofs in Pure Maths
Daniel Platt from Imperial College London's Department of Mathematics explores how computational power is revolutionizing pure mathematics through numerically verified proofs. This talk bridges the gap between traditional pen-and-paper theorem proving and modern computational approaches like physics-informed neural networks.

Platt will demonstrate how approximate solutions to equations can now be rigorously incorporated into formal mathematical proofs — a development made possible by recent advances in computational power. Starting with an accessible toy example, he'll then showcase real applications of this technique in pure mathematics, illustrating how AI and numerical methods are opening new frontiers in mathematical research.
