About this event

What to expect

Hear six candid, five-minute career lessons from across tech at techSPARK Next Gen in central Bristol on 23 September 2026, followed by pizza and relaxed networking.

Designed for people at the beginning of a tech or tech-adjacent career, What I Wish I'd Known replaces polished success stories with honest accounts of wrong turns, unexpected opportunities, confidence wobbles and lessons learned the hard way. Six people from different corners of the industry, including software, product, data, design, marketing, sales and operations, will each answer one question: what do you wish you had known earlier in your career?

Each speaker gets five minutes, with no slides, sales pitches or carefully edited career highlight reels. The result is a fast-moving set of personal perspectives intended to reassure, challenge and help attendees navigate their own next steps.

Evening schedule

  • 5:30pm: Doors open, grab a drink, settle in and meet other attendees
  • 6:00pm: Welcome, followed by six five-minute lightning talks
  • 6:30pm: Pizza, drinks and informal conversation
  • 7:30pm: Official wrap-up, although attendees will not be rushed out

This is a deliberately small, in-person gathering rather than a conference. There are no awkward icebreakers, forced networking exercises or organised breakout groups. You can arrive alone or with colleagues and friends, listen quietly, ask questions and speak to whoever you choose.

Who should attend?

The event is aimed broadly at people in their first 0–7 years of working in tech, whether that means a first role, a fourth role or a complete career pivot. It is relevant to people working in software, product, data, design, marketing, sales, customer success, operations and other tech-adjacent fields. Attendance is based on career stage rather than age, seniority or job title, and no specific technical experience is required.

Organised by techSPARK, Next Gen is a recurring community event held every other month. At the end of this session, attendees can nominate people they would like to hear from next. Future themes under consideration include AI and jobs, productivity and balance, recruitment and professional visibility, and workplace wellbeing.…
