What is the Python Code Dojo?

The Python Code Dojo is a non-competitive, collaborative coding session where developers of all skill levels come together to practice, learn, and improve their Python skills. Hosted by Ray in collaboration with Women's Tech Hub and CodeHub Bristol, these sessions run every two weeks on Wednesday evenings, providing a supportive environment for programmers to hone their craft through deliberate practice and peer learning.

Inspired by traditional martial arts training, where practitioners of varying experience levels train alongside masters, the Python Dojo creates a space where beginners and experts work side-by-side. The format encourages knowledge sharing, mutual support, and the kind of repeated practice that builds genuine expertise.

How the Sessions Work

Each dojo follows a structured yet flexible format designed to maximize learning and collaboration:

  • Arrival and networking - Sessions begin with informal chat, allowing participants to connect with fellow Python enthusiasts
  • Topic selection - Attendees suggest exercises in the ideas Discord channel, then vote democratically to choose the evening's challenge
  • Team formation - Participants split into small groups of 2-4 people, with teams typically including at least one experienced developer to provide guidance
  • Collaborative coding - Teams work together to solve the chosen exercise, discussing approaches and learning from each other's perspectives
  • Solution presentations - Each team shares their solution (complete or incomplete), explaining their thought process and the creative approaches they took to overcome challenges

This structure ensures that everyone participates actively, regardless of their experience level. The emphasis isn't on competition or perfect solutions—it's on the learning journey, problem-solving process, and community support.

Accessibility and Requirements

The Python Dojo maintains an incredibly low barrier to entry. You don't need Python installed on your machine—all coding happens through Replit, an online interpreter and IDE accessible from any browser. A laptop is recommended but not essential. The only true requirement is joining the Discord server (https://discord.gg/qEvWWXG9xh) for coordination and communication.
