About this event

What to expect

What happens to human language when AI can translate anything instantly? Museum of Languages is a thought-provoking workshop that confronts this question head-on, exploring the tension between effortless machine translation and the rich cultural tapestry woven into every language.

Organised by the Jean Golding Institute's Turing Liaison team as part of Data Week 2026, this full-day event examines whether advances in machine translation and language learning will lead to linguistic homogenisation, unprecedented diversity, or something unexpected. As ChatGPT and other AI tools make cross-language communication seamless, we face profound questions: Are we preserving languages or eroding them? Does flawless translation flatten meaning, stripping away voice, texture, and cultural nuance?

What to Expect

The workshop combines academic rigour with public engagement across three distinct formats:

Academic Sessions: Interdisciplinary talks and panel discussions bringing together experts in machine learning, translation studies, linguistics, and museum curation. These sessions explore how AI is transforming language preservation, what cultural knowledge risks being lost in translation, and how we might build frameworks for linguistic diversity in an AI-mediated future.

Ignite-Style Language Introductions: Ten rapid-fire, five-minute talks celebrating linguistic diversity. Each speaker will introduce a different language, highlighting something distinctive or beautiful about how it expresses ideas, structures thought, or captures cultural identity. These micro-presentations serve as living exhibits in the transient "museum."

Evening Keynote: A public-facing lecture addressing language diversity, preservation, or learning in the age of AI, designed to spark broader conversation about what we stand to lose—or gain—as technology reshapes human communication.

Who Should Attend

This event welcomes researchers working with natural language processing, linguists concerned about language endangerment, cultural historians, museum professionals, and anyone fascinated by how AI tools like Claude or Gemini are changing the way humans communicate across linguistic boundaries. Whether you're building translation systems, documenting endangered languages, or simply curious about the future of human expression, this workshop offers essential perspectives.
