About this event

What to expect

If you're passionate about electronics, coding, or home automation, this monthly social at fizzPOP Makerspace in Birmingham offers the perfect blend of hands-on making and peer-to-peer learning. Held on the second Wednesday of every month, Our Friends Electric combines a software and microelectronics social with fizzPOP's regular public open night — giving you access to Birmingham's premier makerspace and its community of hardware hackers, tinkerers, and builders.

What to Expect

This is an informal, drop-in event where you can discuss electronics projects, troubleshoot coding challenges, or explore new ideas with like-minded makers. Whether you're wrestling with a Raspberry Pi project, prototyping with ESP32s or Arduinos, or building home automation systems, you'll find fellow enthusiasts ready to share knowledge and swap stories.

The format is deliberately casual — bring your breadboard and ideas, share your robot vacuum hacks, show off your blinkenlights projects, or dive into discussions about programming languages from Python and JavaScript to Go, Rust, C/C++, or even 6502 Assembly. This is a space where beginners can ask questions and experienced makers can find themselves unexpectedly teaching others.

Access to Tools and Space

fizzPOP boasts a well-stocked electronics room and excellent workspace for laptop-based projects. If you're not yet a member, this public open night provides an ideal opportunity to explore the facility, see the tools and equipment available, and get a feel for the community. Current members can take advantage of the extended access to work on their projects in a collaborative environment.

Who Should Attend

This event welcomes everyone from complete beginners to advanced hardware hackers. Whether you're looking to:

  • Get started with microelectronics and need guidance
  • Debug a tricky project you've been stuck on
  • Share knowledge about home automation platforms
  • Meet other makers working with similar technologies
  • Explore Birmingham's makerspace scene

You'll find a supportive, knowledgeable community ready to help. Just remember this is a themed social event rather than formal instruction — members are helpful and welcoming, but they won't build your project for you!
