About this event

What to expect

Edge AI is transforming how artificial intelligence operates in the real world — moving beyond cloud infrastructure and into smart devices, wearables, and embedded systems that process data locally. This third session of GDG Belfast's Build With AI series offers developers, researchers, and tech professionals an in-depth exploration of on-device intelligence, federated learning, and the privacy implications of deploying AI at the edge.

Hosted at Liberty IT in Belfast, this two-hour session brings together experts from Ulster University to discuss both the opportunities and challenges of building AI for resource-constrained environments. Whether you're working on IoT applications, mobile ML, or privacy-preserving systems, you'll gain practical insights into optimising models for edge deployment and understanding the architectural trade-offs involved.

What You'll Learn

The evening features two comprehensive talks addressing different aspects of Edge AI:

AI Gets Physical at the Edge: Enabling Intelligent Real-World Systems — Dr Ian Cleland, Reader at Ulster University, introduces the fundamentals of Edge AI and explains why running AI directly on devices is shaping the next generation of intelligent systems. This session covers the technologies enabling Edge AI, practical applications across industries, optimisation techniques for constrained environments, and the unique challenges of deploying models on real-world hardware.

The Challenges and Potential of Federated Learning at the Edge — Seán Ó Fithcheallaigh, PhD Researcher at Ulster University's Pervasive Computing Research Centre, explores federated learning as a solution to privacy concerns in edge computing. Learn how this collaborative approach allows AI models to learn without sharing sensitive data, and understand the technical challenges that must be addressed to realise its full potential in sensor networks and IoT devices.

Who Should Attend

This session is ideal for software engineers, data scientists, mobile developers, IoT specialists, and anyone interested in privacy-preserving AI architectures. Whether you're building embedded systems, working with edge computing platforms, or researching distributed machine learning, you'll find practical takeaways relevant to your work. The content assumes basic familiarity with AI/ML concepts but is accessible to developers from various backgrounds.
